Dall Sheep
Dall Sheep - Ovis dalli
Dall Sheep are symbols of the northern wilderness. Dall sheep inhabit the remote mountain ranges of Alaska and the Yukon. Dall sheep live in the alpine meadows and grasslands high above the timberline and near ruggedly steep escape terrain where the sheep retreat without hesitation when danger nears. With their white coats and dramatic, flaring horns, one might think Dall sheep are easy to find and hunt. But the sheer vastness of their wild home, coupled with the sheep's spectacular eyesight and surefootedness, ensures the sheep's getaway from all but the most dedicated and persistent hunters. A good Dall sheep ram will weigh between 180 and 200 pounds and develop a full "curl" in his horns at the ripe age of seven to eight years.
